Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters has dismissed claims that terrorist groups have established operational strongholds in the South-West, describing the recent attack in Oyo State as an isolated criminal incident rather than evidence of an entrenched insurgency.

The clarification follows growing concerns after gunmen abducted 32 people — including 25 students and seven teachers — during attacks on three schools in Oriire Local Government Area on May 15, 2026.

In a statement, Defence spokesperson Michael Onoja said intelligence reports do not indicate the presence of any permanent terrorist camps in the South-West region. He noted that previous military operations in the Old Oyo National Park had already weakened criminal networks operating in the area.

According to the Defence Headquarters, the recent attack should not be interpreted as proof of an organized insurgent structure in the region. The military also warned against spreading narratives capable of creating fear or exaggerating the strength of criminal groups.

The Armed Forces further assured Nigerians that intensive rescue operations are ongoing, with troops combing forest areas alongside other security agencies and local vigilantes to secure the safe return of the abducted victims.

Chief of Defence Staff Olufemi Oluyede also expressed sympathy to the affected families and pledged that security forces would continue operations until those responsible are captured and peace is fully restored.
