The Rivers State House of Assembly has begun formal impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Oduh, lawmakers confirmed this week.

During a plenary session presided over by Speaker Martins Amaewhule, the Majority Leader read a notice of allegations alleging gross misconduct against both the governor and his deputy.

The document was reportedly signed by 26 members of the state assembly, who say the accusations are rooted in breaches of the Nigerian Constitution and alleged misconduct in office.

The Speaker announced that the impeachment notice will be formally served on Fubara within the next seven days.

A separate notice detailing similar allegations against Deputy Governor Oduh was also read out in the chamber.

The lawmakers accuse the governor of actions that undermine constitutional governance and obstruct the proper functions of the state legislature.

While the impeachment move is underway, details about the next legal and procedural steps remain under close watch, and Fubara’s response is still pending.
