Rivers Governor Fubara Dissolves State Executive Council Days After Reported Reconciliation With Wike

Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has dissolved his State Executive Council, directing that all political appointees immediately hand over their duties to senior civil servants as part of a government reorganisation.

In a statement released on Thursday and signed by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Onwuka Nzeshi, Fubara ordered that all Commissioners and Special Advisers transfer responsibilities without delay to the Permanent Secretaries or most senior officers in their ministries to ensure continuity in public service.

Governor Fubara thanked outgoing members of the council for their service and wished them success in their future endeavours.

The dissolution comes 48 hours after the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, confirmed efforts aimed at easing the prolonged political crisis in Rivers State — a dispute that has kept the state in the national spotlight.

Earlier this week, Wike revealed that President Bola Tinubu hosted a closed-door meeting at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, bringing together the minister, Governor Fubara and other key figures from Rivers in renewed attempts to calm the decades-long power struggle that has rocked the oil-rich state.

Though official details of that session were not disclosed, sources familiar with the talks said they were part of ongoing efforts to restore stability and unity.

Following the meeting at Aso Rock, Fubara reportedly accompanied Wike to the minister’s residence in Guzape, Abuja, a gesture observers interpret as a possible step toward reconciliation.

Rivers State has endured deep political divisions since a fallout between Wike and Fubara emerged after the governor took office in May 2023. The conflict has played out in fierce battles for control of the Rivers State House of Assembly, party leadership struggles, attempted impeachments, court cases, and heightened tensions that raised concerns about governance and security in the state.
