Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has approved a ₦50,000 wage award for public sector workers as part of measures to ease the burden of rising living costs.
The announcement was made on Friday during the 2026 International Workers’ Day celebration held at Mobolaji Johnson Arena. The governor, represented by his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, said the additional payment would be implemented for the month of May.
He explained that the decision was taken in response to ongoing economic pressures, including increased fuel prices and broader global challenges, with the aim of supporting workers during this period.
Sanwo-Olu praised the dedication of Lagos workers, noting that their daily efforts remain the driving force behind the state’s growth and stability. He emphasized that the strength of Lagos lies in its workforce—ranging from teachers and healthcare professionals to artisans and civil servants—who keep the system running.
Addressing key concerns, the governor acknowledged the challenges workers face in housing and transportation. He stated that the government is actively investing in affordable housing projects, with thousands of units already delivered and more expected before the end of 2026. He added that the rent-to-own scheme requires only a five percent initial payment, making it more accessible.
On transportation, he highlighted ongoing improvements in the state’s rail system, noting that millions of passengers have already benefited, with further expansion and additional coaches underway to enhance mobility.
The governor also assured retirees of continued and timely pension payments, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to their welfare.
He further emphasized the importance of maintaining open dialogue with labour unions to ensure policies remain responsive to workers’ needs.
Earlier, the Head of Service, Bode Agoro, stressed that a motivated workforce is key to efficient service delivery and long-term development.
