Human rights activist and presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, Omoyele Sowore, has outlined major economic and social reforms he plans to implement if elected president in 2027, including a ₦500,000 national minimum wage and a large-scale public housing initiative across Nigeria.
In several statements shared on his X account, Sowore said his administration would focus on improving workers’ welfare, ending exploitative labour practices, and providing affordable housing for millions of Nigerians.
According to him, his government would revive mass public housing projects but with a different structure that promotes equality rather than separating citizens based on income levels.
Sowore explained that the proposed housing estates would accommodate people from different economic backgrounds and would include modern infrastructure such as schools, hospitals, shopping centres, recreational facilities, green areas, and accessible transportation systems.
He accused members of the political class of diverting public resources for personal gain while many Nigerians continue to struggle with poverty and homelessness.
The AAC candidate stated that his administration aims to construct one million affordable and environmentally sustainable public homes designed for workers, students, and families across the country.
On labour issues, Sowore promised to abolish casualisation and contract staffing systems, which he described as unfair and exploitative to workers.
He argued that employees deserve stable jobs, decent salaries, healthcare benefits, pensions, and humane working conditions rather than being treated as disposable labour.
Sowore also maintained that insecurity and unemployment have been used for years to suppress workers and weaken labour rights, promising that his administration would restore dignity and bargaining power to Nigerian workers.
Speaking on wages, he insisted that a ₦500,000 minimum wage is realistic and necessary considering the country’s current economic realities.
He added that professionals in critical sectors — including teachers, doctors, nurses, police officers, and military personnel — deserve additional allowances and improved welfare packages due to the nature of their responsibilities and sacrifices.
The AAC presidential candidate said his proposed reforms are aimed at reducing inequality, improving living standards, and creating a fairer society for ordinary Nigerians ahead of the 2027 general elections.
