U.S. President Donald Trump has pushed back against criticism surrounding a controversial AI-generated image that circulated online, which many interpreted as depicting him in the likeness of Jesus Christ.
The image, which was briefly shared on his Truth Social platform before being taken down, sparked backlash from various groups who described it as inappropriate due to its resemblance to religious symbolism.
Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump rejected the claims, insisting the image had been misunderstood. He stated that it was never intended to portray him as a religious figure but rather as a healer, comparing the concept to that of a doctor or humanitarian worker.
According to him, the visual was meant to reflect the idea of helping and improving people’s lives, not to make any spiritual or blasphemous statement.
The artwork featured Trump in flowing robes with a glowing backdrop, hands extended in a pose many associated with healing. It also included dramatic elements such as airborne figures, military imagery, and celebratory visuals, blending symbolic themes with patriotic tones.
The controversy has added to ongoing tensions between Trump and Pope Leo XIV, following the president’s recent remarks criticising the Pope’s views on global issues.
Despite the growing criticism, Trump maintained that the reaction was based on misinterpretation and reiterated that the image carried no religious message.
