Two additional members of the Rivers State House of Assembly have appealed to their colleagues to halt the ongoing impeachment process against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu.

The appeal follows the impeachment notice issued on January 8, which accused the governor of gross misconduct, including allegations of extra-budgetary spending, demolition of the Assembly complex, and defiance of a Supreme Court ruling on legislative autonomy.

According to a report by TVC News, the lawmakers—Barile Nwakoh (Khana Constituency I) and Emilia Amadi (Obio/Akpor Constituency II)—made their position known on Wednesday, barely a day after two other legislators voiced similar concerns.

While acknowledging alleged constitutional breaches, they said their decision to push for a withdrawal of the impeachment move came after interventions by respected leaders within the state.

Earlier, PUNCH Online reported that two lawmakers had already withdrawn their support for the impeachment and urged the Assembly to explore alternative ways of resolving the political crisis. Speaking at a press briefing in Port Harcourt, the Minority Leader of the House, Sylvanus Nwankwo (Omuma Constituency), appealed for restraint and dialogue.

“We are appealing to our colleagues to temper justice with mercy and consider resolving this issue outside impeachment proceedings,” Nwankwo said, adding that elders and leaders from within and outside Rivers State had called for leniency.

With this latest development, four of the 26 lawmakers who initially endorsed the impeachment notice have now publicly backed a peaceful resolution. The Rivers State House of Assembly is expected to reconvene on January 15, 2026.
