The Nigeria Democratic Congress has stated that it is putting strict measures in place to stop politicians from using the popularity of Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso as a shortcut to secure political offices ahead of the 2027 elections.
Speaking during an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, the party’s spokesperson, Osa Director, said the NDC has carefully studied what happened during the 2023 general elections and is determined not to repeat the same mistakes.
According to him, many individuals with little political background joined the Labour Party and the New Nigeria Peoples Party in 2023 largely because of the growing popularity of Obi and Kwankwaso. Several of those candidates eventually won elections but later defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress shortly after assuming office.
Director explained that the NDC has already tightened its screening process to ensure only committed and credible individuals emerge as candidates under the party’s platform.
He revealed that during the party’s screening exercise, special attention was given to aspirants — particularly those returning from abroad or individuals with no established political history — to determine their true intentions and level of commitment to the party.
According to him, the party asked detailed questions regarding their political ideology, long-term vision, and grassroots involvement before considering them for participation.
The spokesperson acknowledged that many politicians may be attracted to the NDC because it is increasingly being viewed as a strong alternative platform amid dissatisfaction with the current political system in the country.
However, he stressed that the party would not hand over tickets to individuals simply because they want to benefit from public sympathy or ride on the popularity of prominent opposition figures.
Director maintained that aspirants must demonstrate verifiable political credentials, loyalty to the party, and commitment to its principles before being considered for elective positions.
He added that the NDC intends to avoid the wave of defections and political opportunism witnessed after the 2023 elections by ensuring candidates genuinely believe in the party’s ideology and objectives.
According to him, the party is focused on building a disciplined political structure and would not operate with a “business as usual” mentality ahead of the next general elections.
