Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has officially withdrawn from the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primary election ahead of the 2027 polls.

Fubara announced his decision in a personally signed statement released on Wednesday, revealing that he would now throw his support behind whoever eventually emerges as the party’s candidate.

According to the governor, the decision followed wide consultations with family members, political allies, friends, and close associates.

“After careful reflection and extensive consultations, I have decided to step down from the APC governorship primaries. I remain fully committed to supporting whoever emerges as the flag bearer of our great party,” he stated.

The development comes amid growing political realignments and intense calculations ahead of the 2027 general elections in Rivers State.

Fubara admitted that the decision was not an easy one but stressed that the interest of Rivers State must come above personal ambition.

He noted that true leadership sometimes requires sacrifice, especially when peace, stability, and unity are at stake.

“Rivers State is bigger than any individual. At this critical time, the unity and stability of our state must take priority over personal interests,” the governor added.

The embattled governor also expressed gratitude to supporters who stood by him throughout the political process, acknowledging that many loyalists may feel disappointed by his withdrawal from the race.

Fubara explained that his recent silence on political developments was intentional and guided by strategic considerations aimed at protecting the state’s broader interest.

Meanwhile, the governor’s withdrawal follows a similar move by APC chieftain and fellow governorship aspirant, Tonye Cole, who also stepped down from the contest, citing party unity among the reasons for his decision.

The latest development is expected to reshape the political landscape in Rivers State as preparations intensify ahead of the 2027 elections.
